Baby and toddler activities in East Cork

East Cork has more for babies and toddlers than it looks, but most of it is hard to find online. This guide lists 46 classes, playgroups, pools, playgrounds and rainy-day options for children under five in Cobh, Carrigtwohill and Midleton, with ages, days and prices. 35 are confirmed for this season; the others are marked "ring ahead". Why I made this guide

I'm Sofia. I teach dance to children and mums in Cobh and Carrigtwohill, and I'm a mum myself.

Ask anyone with a small child in East Cork where to go on a Tuesday morning and you'll get a good answer. Ask Google and you'll get castles and whiskey tours. What's on for babies and toddlers here is real, but it lives on Facebook pages, posters in community centre windows and word of mouth. Some of what you do find online stopped running years ago.

So I put it in one place: every group, class, pool and playground for under-fives I could find in Cobh, Carrigtwohill and Midleton, with the day, the time, the price and the date it was last checked. Where I couldn't confirm something for this season, I say so and give you the number to ring.

Two of the classes here are mine. The rest have nothing to do with me. They're simply what's on.

How do I use this guide?

Pick your town below. Each town page is grouped by what you're looking for, and every entry shows the age range, the day, the time, the price and how to book.

  • Babies, 0 to 12 months: feeding support, sensory classes, gentle movement for you, and warm places with somewhere to change a nappy.
  • Toddlers, 1 to 4: parent and toddler groups, music, swimming, playgrounds, and things that burn energy indoors when it rains.

Each entry also says when it was last checked. "Ring ahead" means we found it but couldn't confirm it for this season, so call before you go. You can filter each page by age and show only the indoor options, which in East Cork you'll use more than you'd like.

Which town are you in?

What is there for babies under one in East Cork?

Less than for toddlers, and much of it is for you as much as for the baby. The HSE breastfeeding groups in Cobh and Midleton are free and weekly. Midleton also has Baby Sensory for the first year and parent and baby yoga. The parent and toddler groups in all three towns welcome babies from birth, and nobody minds if you just sit with a cup of tea.

My Mum & Baby class in Carrigtwohill on Tuesday afternoons is built for this stage: you stretch and move after months of carrying and feeding, your baby plays on the mat beside you, and you can stop to feed whenever you need to. The first class is free.

What is there for toddlers, 1 to 4?

Much more. Parent and toddler groups meet in Cobh on Tuesdays, in Carrigtwohill from Monday to Thursday, and in Midleton on Tuesdays, for free or a few euro. Swimming lessons start at three in Cobh, with family swims before that. Fota Wildlife Park is free for under-threes. Every town has a playground, and there are more within a short drive of Carrigtwohill.

From three, dance starts to make sense. My Kids Ballroom classes in Cobh take children from three, and Ballroom 4+ in Carrigtwohill from four: thirty to forty minutes, real music, no outfit needed.

What can we do in East Cork when it rains?

Start with the libraries in Cobh and Midleton: free, warm, and open Tuesday to Saturday. The parent and toddler groups are all indoors. Cobh Heritage Centre lets under-sixes in free and has a café. Jungle World in Midleton is the only soft play centre we found in East Cork. And the hotel pools in Midleton and Castlemartyr have proper facilities for babies. Each town page has an indoor-only filter.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free activities for babies and toddlers in East Cork?

Yes. The parent and toddler group in Cobh is free, and the ones in Carrigtwohill and Midleton cost a few euro per family. Libraries, playgrounds, the HSE breastfeeding groups, Fota House arboretum and the walks at Marlogue Woods, Harper's Island and Ballyannan Woods are all free. Fota Wildlife Park is free for children under three.

Which parent and toddler group should I try first?

The one nearest to you, on a day you can face. All three are drop-in, welcome babies from birth to about three, and run in term time only. Carrigtwohill runs four mornings a week, so if you miss one, there's another the next day.

Is there soft play in East Cork?

One that we found: Jungle World Adventure Centre at Market Green in Midleton. Their hours and prices aren't published online, so contact them before you go (021 463 7055, facebook.com/kidsjungleworld). The nearest alternatives are in Cork city.

Is there baby swimming in East Cork?

Not as a dedicated parent and baby class, as far as we could find. Coral Leisure in Cobh starts lessons at three and runs family swims in a shallow learner pool. The Talbot Hotel in Midleton has a separate babies' pool, and Castlemartyr Resort keeps its pool at about 30 degrees. Both hotels work on membership, so ask about access.

How often is this guide updated?

Every three months, and whenever someone tells us something has changed. The date at the top of each page is the real date of the last update. If you spot a mistake, message me on WhatsApp and I'll fix it the same week.

Can I add my class or group?

Yes, and it's free. If you run something for under-fives in Cobh, Carrigtwohill or Midleton, send me the name, day, time, price, age range and a link. I only list what's current.

Come and dance with us

If you have a toddler who dances around the kitchen, or a baby and a back that both need some attention, come and try a class. The first one is always free, and you're welcome to bring the whole gang.
